In case you missed it, September is Self-Improvement Month. Don't fret if you weren't aware—we're not sure how the ninth month acquired this celebration of positive human development either. But as long as we're celebrating, do something good for yourself—like improving your smile.
If this doesn't seem like a lofty enough self-improvement goal, remember this: There's much more to a smile than its looks. Smiles “speak” a social language, allowing us to wordlessly communicate acceptance, happiness, or even sympathy. A smile is a valuable part of beginning and maintaining relationships, be they familial, social or professional.
So why not go all out and enhance your smile during Self-Improvement Month? To that end, here are a few options:
Teeth whitening. Maybe your teeth are a little yellowed. If you have mild to moderate enamel staining, consider undergoing a professional whitening procedure. We use a safe but effective solution to give you just the level of brightness you want. And with proper maintenance and occasional touch-ups, you can have a brighter smile for years.
Bonding, veneers or crowns. If your teeth have chips, heavy discolorations or other mild to moderate defects, we can offer a variety of solutions. We can bond special dental materials to repair slight defects that make a tooth look good as new. For moderate flaws, heavy staining or slight gaps, we can bond a custom-made veneer to the front of teeth to hide these imperfections. We can also cap teeth with natural-looking crowns to cover larger disfigurements.
Orthodontics. Misaligned teeth can detract from an otherwise attractive smile. Orthodontics can help—and as long as you're in good oral and general health, you can undergo bite correction at any age. Braces aren't your only option: Removable clear aligners are nearly invisible to others, and because they're removable, they make it easier to keep your teeth clean.
Dental implants. Missing teeth can definitely dim a smile. And while there are a number of restoration options, dental implants are one of the top choices. Implants not only look and feel lifelike, they're exceedingly durable. Although they may be more expensive up-front, they have been shown to last longer and tend to require less maintenance than other restorations. Dental implants are a worthwhile investment in a long-term smile.
Cosmetic enhancements like teeth whitening or bonding may require only one or two visits, while other options like orthodontics or implants can take much longer. But you can still get the ball rolling now. Make an appointment this month for a full dental exam and consultation to start your journey toward improving your smile.

Professional teeth whitening is the most efficient way to get a visibly brighter smile quickly.
You are ready to wow your potential boss at your next interview. You have the power suit. You have your revamped resume. Now it’s time to tackle your appearance. After all, you want a look that screams success. So, how’s your smile? Since a smile is one of the first features you may notice about a person, you want your smile to be as radiant as possible. Of course, you might not have a lot of time for a makeover. Don’t worry; our Winter Park, FL, cosmetic dentist, Dr. Edgar Acuña, can get your smile whiter in no time.
If you are under a time crunch and you notice that your teeth look rather yellow and could use a boost (don’t let that white button-up shirt you’re going to wear for your interview outshine your smile) then it might be time to schedule a whitening session with our Winter Park dentist. No other system is as strong or produces results as effectively as professional in-office teeth whitening can. The power lies in the gel’s active stain-fighting ingredient.
Professional whitening gel contains either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Besides having this active ingredient present, it’s the percentage of active ingredient within the gel that makes the system more effective. That’s why you won’t see the same amazing results with over-the-counter whitening kits. These systems have to be safe for everyone to use, so the amount of active whitening ingredient within the gels is minimal, which means it will take a few weeks to notice any results. If you want to get fast, noticeable results, then it’s time to turn to in-office whitening.
When you come in for in-office teeth whitening we will place an applicator over the lips to keep them open and to prevent the bleaching gel from touching your lips, gums or other soft tissue (as the gel can cause irritation). From there, we will paint the whitening gel over the front surface of your teeth and leave the gel for around 10 to 15 minutes. Sometimes a laser will be directed over the teeth to further activate and speed up the bleaching process. Most whitening sessions require more than one application and most of the time this can be completed in about 45 minutes to one hour.
You’ll be amazed with the results you’ll achieve with professional teeth whitening in Winter Park, FL (and you’re sure to wow them in that interview with that gorgeous smile!). But don’t take our word for it; see for yourself by scheduling a cosmetic consultation with Acuña Dentistry. You won’t be sorry!
When the multi-platinum recording artist, songwriter and TV personality Jason Derulo was recently asked about his ideal woman, his answer covered a remarkably broad spectrum. "There’s no specific thing," he said, "so I think it’s unfair to say what my ‘type’ is." But it turns out that there is one thing the So You Think You Can Dance judge considers essential: A beautiful smile.
"I’m not into messy teeth," Derulo said. "If the grill has spaces and different colors, it’s not my vibe."
As it turns out, he may be on to something: A number of surveys have indicated that a bright, healthy smile is often the first thing people notice when meeting someone new. Yet many are reluctant to open up that big grin because they aren’t satisfied with the way their teeth look. If you’re one of them, consider this: Modern cosmetic dentistry offers a variety of ways to improve your smile — and it may be easier and more affordable than you think.
For example, if your smile isn’t as bright as you would like it to be, teeth whitening is an effective and economical way to lighten it up. If you opt for in-office treatments, you can expect a lightening effect of up to 10 shades in a single one-hour treatment! Or, you can achieve the same effect in a week or two with a take-home kit we can custom-make for you. Either way, you’ll be safe and comfortable being treated under the supervision of a dental professional — and the results can be expected to last for up to two years, or perhaps more.
If your teeth have minor spacing irregularities, small chips or cracks, it may be possible to repair them in a single office visit via cosmetic bonding. In this process, a liquid composite resin is applied to the teeth and cured (hardened) with a special light. This high-tech material, which comes in colors to match your teeth, can be built up in layers and shaped with dental instruments to create a pleasing, natural effect.
If your smile needs more than just a touch-up, dental veneers may be the answer. These wafer-thin coverings, placed right on top of your natural teeth, can be made in a variety of shapes and colors — from a natural pearly luster to a brilliant "Hollywood white." Custom-made veneers typically involve the removal of a few millimeters of tooth enamel, making them a permanent — and irreversible — treatment. However, by making teeth look more even, closing up spaces and providing dazzling whiteness, veneers just might give you the smile you’ve always wanted.
